Your Complete Guide to Crowns & Bridges: Post-Operative Care

Congratulations on restoring your smile!

Crowns and bridges are excellent restorations designed to protect weakened teeth, replace missing ones, and restore your ability to chew and speak comfortably. Following these care instructions will ensure your new restoration lasts for years to come.

1. Home Care (Post-Operative Instructions)

Whether you have a temporary or permanent restoration, proper daily care is essential.

Biting & Chewing

Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods (like caramel or ice) on the restored side. If your bite feels “high” or uneven after the numbness wears off, call us for a quick adjustment.

Manage Sensitivity

Mild sensitivity to hot or cold is completely normal for a few days. Using a desensitizing toothpaste can help soothe the tooth.

Oral Hygiene

Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. Floss carefully around the restoration to keep the gums healthy.

Temporary Restorations

If you have a temporary crown, pull floss out from the side rather than pulling it up, so you don’t accidentally pop the crown off.

2. The Process Timeline

1

Step 1: Preparation & Temporary

Your tooth is prepared, impressions are taken, and a temporary restoration is placed to protect the tooth while the dental lab crafts your final piece.

2

Step 2: The Waiting Period

Be extra careful with your temporary crown or bridge. Avoid sticky foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth.

3

Step 3: Final Placement

Your permanent, custom-made crown or bridge is permanently cemented. Once set, you can enjoy your fully restored smile!
