Tooth Extraction: Patient Care Instructions

Please read these instructions carefully to ensure a smooth recovery.

Before Your Appointment

  • Update us: Inform your dentist about any medical conditions, allergies, or medications you take (especially blood thinners).
  • Come with a clean mouth: Brush and floss normally before your visit.
  • Sedation prep: If you are receiving sedation, follow our fasting rules (usually no food/drink for 6–8 hours) and arrange a ride home.

After Your Extraction (Home Care)

  • Control bleeding: Bite firmly on the provided gauze pad for 30–60 minutes. Slight oozing is normal.
  • Reduce swelling: Hold an ice pack to your cheek for 15–20 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours.
  • Manage pain: Take all prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications exactly as directed.
  • Eat soft foods: Stick to yogurt, mashed potatoes, or smoothies for 1–2 days. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods.
  • Keep it clean: Brush your teeth gently, but completely avoid the extraction site for the first 24 hours. After 24 hours, you may gently rinse with warm salt water.
  • Rest and recover: Avoid heavy exercise, smoking, and alcohol for at least 48 hours to prevent painful complications like dry socket.
